Sweet baby Connor was the sweetest thing at his 3 month session! He has such pretty eyes and the cutest little smirk when you tickle it out of him. It was so sweet of his aunt to gift a session to his parents, babies change so fast and it’s important to take TONS of pictures in the first year. I always recommend a couple of milestone sessions during the first year and it is up to the parents to base them on age or developmental milestones. After their newborn session, holding their heads up for a certain length of time is a great time because then we can photograph baby both on their backs and their bellies. And every baby will determine how our session goes, as each one is different. Connor didn’t like going on his belly for more than a few seconds but that’s all it took to get an incredible image that will be a keepsake memory for years to come.
The next milestone is usually 6 months, but I recommend waiting until baby is comfortable sitting up on their own without being propped. Now babies are not sturdy and will fall to the side or the back that is why moms and dads stay just out of the shot with their eyes trained on their little ones so that if they see them start to wobble they can grab them and right them back up. Now babies don’t have to be 6 months for this step to take place. Some babies reach this step at 5 months, some at 7 months. So we tend to schedule for just after the 6 month mark as that’s a pretty good time and works well for all of us. Sitting up sessions are so much fun because babies are full of gummy smiles and full of expressions! You just never know what you are going to get but it’s always wonderful and produces amazing results!
While a 9 month session is fun, parents normally opt for a first year session which can take place between 11-13 months. These are always fast paced as baby is usually a fast crawler, could be walking away at any time and are very curious about all the pretty things they see in the studio. We go with the flow and with patience we always get our shots. One year olds are full of spunk, mischievous grins and have a sparkle in their eyes that i just love to capture!
