Blog about Autumn – Is 40 Days Old too old for newborn portraits?

This sweet rainbow baby came into the studio and was as cute as can be! Her mom reached out to me to ask if it was possible to still get newborn portraits as she was approaching 40 days old. I told her of course even though she was hearing “No’s” from other studios. At 40 days old she would definitely act differently then a baby that was 10 days old but that didn’t mean we couldn’t create some beautiful portraits that she would love. Older babies tend to stretch a lot more and be more alert and less sleepy. This is great if you are trying to photograph a lifestyle session where the pictures are about a parent interacting with their baby but is more of a challenge if we are trying to get sleepy posed portraits that you would typically see from our studio. We were up to the challenge and Autumn was great! She was definitely more alert and was harder to get to fall asleep but it just means we had to use more patience with her which we have in spades. Patience is the key to good newborn photography. And patience is what created both great wide-awake portraits as well as sleepy time pictures of sweet little Autumn.

As Autumn is a rainbow baby, we incorporated this sweet little felted rainbow that we just received in the mail and it went perfectly with the jewel toned colours (in purple and teal) that Autumn’s mom asked us to use. My daughter Ruby and I had fun picking out what headbands we would incorporate and creating sets with flowers in jewel toned colours like teal and purple.

We were really pleased with how Autumn’s session turned out, and while challenging at that age, we would do it again in a heartbeat. We treat every baby under 3 months as a newborn baby and treat their session as such, creating gorgeous portrait to remember how little they were.

Thank you again for trusting me with your sweet rainbow baby and I am looking forward to seeing how big she grows at her 6 month session!

Enjoy a look at some of my favourites from our time together!
