Suzanne was excited to schedule her maternity and newborn photography portrait sessions with us and we had planned to take them at our Kingston Ontario studio but as many moms have come to know pregnancy doesn’t always go as planned.  Suzanne was put on bed rest early on in her pregnancy and was well taken care of on the Labour and Delivery Floor at Kingston General Hospital (KGH).  The staff at KGH helped Suzanne and her husband feel rest assured that they were being closely monitored, well taken care of and comfortable which is a big factor in a long stay!  She had only good testimonials to the care she received while there.

It’s funny how timing always works out as she emailed me to say the week before our scheduled studio session that she might be going in to the hospital and like a worried mother hen I fretted by my computer for any news.  The news came just a few days before our planned session date that she was in and wasn’t coming out.  She knew that I normally don’t shoot lifestyle/indoor portraits outside of my studio but as an experienced wedding photographer I am used to all types of lighting scenarios and was I willing to come to the Kingston General Hospital Labour and Delivery Ward and take portraits there?  I right away answered “Yes, Of Course!”.  She was so excited about having maternity portraits taken and I would never deny her that!  So I packed up my gear and met her in the hospital.  Scouted around and found that the Maternity Ward had a great little visitor lounge, that although was open to everyone, was mostly unoccupied during our time together.  It had great big windows and a really neat glass wall that I knew I could get my creative juices excited about!

Suzanne needed to be extra careful in her movements and so this relaxed maternity photography session just had a fun and carefree feel to it.  She was able to go back and forth to her room which was just next door and get changed into different outfits that I had brought along and we tried our best to hide her hospital bracelets and IV tape as that bothered her a bit, and who could blame her, it wasn’t exactly what she had in mind when she hired me.  BUT I can say with a happy heart that when Suzanne saw her finished portraits she was blown away with how I could make a visitor waiting room look so elegant.  She was in love with her portraits and I received the nicest email from her mother who lives out West thanking me so much for these beautiful portraits of her daughter.  She didn’t understand why her daughter wanted maternity portraits and didn’t see the value in them, but after she had the chance to review them and they left her in tears she gave her heartfelt thanks to me and was anxiously anticipating the newborn portrait session to come.  I was too!

Thank you again to Kingston General Hospital for allowing us to use their visitor waiting room on the Labour and Delivery Floor so that Suzanne could still have her dream maternity photoshoot!  She is forever grateful and so am I!

Enjoy a look at some of our favourites from our time together!

Surprise!  The doctors let Suzanne out for a short time to go across the street to MacDonald Park where they have this beautiful gazebo and the most incredible sunsets.  We really lucked out with the weather and the golden light.  And you get to have a glimpse of Suzanne’s husband!  These two were just so excited to welcome their baby boy soon!

Look at Suzanne rocking her IV and hospital bracelets!  She’s a strong mama and hats off to any mama that has had to be put on bed rest because I can only imagine that it can be a trying experience!  Thankfully Suzanne was surrounded by books, entertainment and a stream of constant visitors to make her stay at KGH a little smoother.

We hope you enjoyed a look into some of our favourite portraits from our time together with Suzanne!  We were so happy we were able to go to the park across the street and get those beautiful sunset maternity portraits that are so coveted!
