In any business there are investments you make in order to reach your goals. My goal has always been to be the best photographer I can be…to put my best foot forward and to continuously learn my craft. So after speaking with my husband who is truly my behind the scenes partner in my business we decided that 2014 was going to be a year of changes, of improving my work even more. One of those changes was to take on even less weddings and put more emphasis on my newborn and children photography (by far my favourite subjects, as I feel like I just “get” them so easily and I absolutely love interacting with them). So we decided taking a workshop in 2014 was something we wanted to invest in. When we made the decision I didn’t have to look around as I knew exactly who I wanted to learn from.
Caralee Case was the first photographer that I fell in love with..her pictures i mean, although she is pretty much totally awesome in person too! I knew that Caralee Case hosted workshops with her good friend Jennifer Nace, who I came to love just as much as Caralee. So last year we made the committment to follow through with flying to Minnesota and taking a workshop. It was a big investment not only financially but it would be the first time I would leave Ruby since she was born 17 months ago and only the second time leaving Grey and he’s almost 5! So there was some nerves as there is with any mom leaving her kids. Now normally it wouldn’t be as big a deal because the hubby would stay home with the kids right? Nope! We decided it was going to be a little vacation for us too. So in June we packed our bags and flew to Minnesota to have the time of our lives 😀 The workshop was amazing, it reinforced practices I was already doing and taught me new techniques that I can’t wait to put into practice. But invaluable information I came away from it was the business aspects and the subsequent motivation it instilled in Blaine and I to take my business to a whole new level. Blaine even came inside Jennifer’s amazing studio to see how the set up was, he came out during our dinner with Jenny and Caralee where we could ask them anything and they are still answering questions even now on our secret Facebook page. It gave Blaine and I the opportunity to talk about our dreams of having a really successful studio one day and how that day could come faster than we thought possible. And I’m not going to lie, It also gave us some much needed R&R away from the kids to re-connect together without being asked for more milk or changing dirty diapers!!!
Overall it was incredible, well worth the investment and has given me a renewed sense of purpose and passion. Over the next couple of weeks I am going to share some images from the workshop with all of you. The set ups were incredible and are definitely the direction I want to take my own business.
