Using props in your maternity/pregnancy photographs can be a double edged sword. What I mean by that is using the right prop can enhance a pregnancy photo while the wrong prop can date it or make the image look too much about the prop and not about the woman holding life within her.
Like many photographers I struggled to find my niche in the maternity photography market and used what everyone else was using when I first started out. This included those little blocks with the letters B-A-B-Y on it or the baby’s name, ultrasound pictures or little ribbons that said due dates on them. That is all well and good but didn’t ever feel like it was authentic to what I wanted my pregnancy photos to look like.
When picking a photographer for this special time in your life it’s important to choose one based on their style over any other criteria. Will you like what your images look like a couple of months from now or even years? I’ve gone back to the basics without the extra gizmos and am so happy to deliver stunning photographs to the mama’s in my calendar. Looking through my images you will see that the focus is on mom and not the props. They are used to enhance the image with mom being the star.
Let’s take a look at a couple of examples:
This image shows some flowers used to enhance the beauty of mom and create an ethereal image. This is one of my favourites and is exactly the type of image I love to create. Simple and beautiful with a touch of whimsy.
This next image shows how the use of a chair in the middle of this beautiful yellow field grounds this couple and allows for different heights that draw the viewer into both of them. They are the center of the image even if they are not centered.
There are a lot of maternity photographers out there to choose from – I hope by seeing my use of props and how I like to really focus on mom looking her very best you will see that the use of heavy props or those that may become dated or are considered a fad are not necessary. It’s about the mom in all her beautiful belly glory, not how much you can add to it.
